How to Choose Wound Dressings on the NPTE

FIND OUT WHICH 3-4 KEY CRITERIA MAKE YOUR DECIDING FACTORS

.01 ASSESS!

For nearly everything in physical therapy you need an assessment first. It just makes sense. That way you can label the problems and impairments so that you know how to fix and treat them.

We use the exact same principles when it comes to wound dressings, even though this topic seems highly distant from the normal topics we think about for physical therapy.

Therefore, you always need to start with a wound ASSESSMENT before you choose a dressing.

How do you do this?

Especially when you're on the NPTE and you don't have a live wound in front of you?

.02 KEY CRITERIA

You use the information provided to you and you think through a few key criteria to reason out your ultimate decision:

  1. Wound depth

  2. Wound drainage

  3. Presence of infection

.03 FILL IN THE DETAILS

Now, although we ultimately want you to think everything through and use the great brain you've been gifted, it is helpful to familiarize yourself with the dressings and some information about each one.

One of the best ways to do this is to visually see the different dressings.

Check out the video for the rest of the details on the major wound dressings.

Takeaway Prescription

Your prescription for the day is to find one thing that makes you laugh. Like a real laugh - a belly laugh - ideally one where you temporarily end up out of breath and possibly rolling on the floor...
